A Golden Voice
Christine Zhou
A granddaughter's search for the truth behind the life and final years of Zhou Xuan, China's legendary "Golden Voice".
A personal journey through family, identity, memory and a changing China.

A remarkable lite, an untold story
Zhou Xuan was one of the most celebrated singers and actresses of early Chinese cinema. Kidnapped and sold into adoption as a child, she rose to fame in 1930s Shanghai and died in 1957 at just 37, leaving many questions about her final years unanswered.
Her granddaughter Christine sets out to understand what happened, piecing together her story through family accounts, archives and people who have studied her life. Along the way, the film opens a window onto a remarkable period of modern Chinese history.
Three generations, a changing China
The granddaughter of legendary Chinese actress Zhou Xuan the "Golden Voice", returns to China to understand what happened during her grandmother's final years in a psychiatric hospital. Her search takes her through three generations of family history and a changing China as she tries to understand where she comes from.
A personal connection
I was named after a grandmother I never met. Growing up, I knew Zhou Xuan as a famous actress and singer, but it was through my own search for identity and ancestry that I began looking more closely at her story and the unanswered questions surrounding her final years.
I hope the film allows audiences to discover the woman behind the "Golden Voice" and, through her story, a part of Chinese history that is still not widely known.
As both filmmaker and composer, I bring image, memory and music together. My grandmother once said, "Singing is my soul." Music becomes a bridge between her world and mine and how I connect with her.
